Maggie Rogers

Ear to the Ground. Artist Discovery Series.

This blog post will pay tribute to new found artists. Up and coming, or reemerging, regardless their story and music need to reach your ears.

Today we listen to the amazing craft of a woman attending NYU Clive Davis Institute of Recording.

Born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Maggie Rogers began writing music to deal with her emotions about middle school boys. After picking up the banjo in high school, she wrote and recorded her debut "The Echo" in the hours after school in a small, unused office space. Her warm, nostalgic, string-heavy folk tunes earned Maggie admission to the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded at NYU where she’ll graduate with a double major in English in May. Since moving to the city, Maggie has lent her voice to others, playing in bands and supporting friends as a multi-instrumentalist. In June 2014 she released "Blood Ballet," a half-electric, half-folk introspection that made the short list for the Austin Chronicle's "Folk Record of the Year" and earned her the title of The Deli Mag’s "Artist of the Month." Maggie spent the last year living in France and falling in and out of love. She’s excited to make new music this winter - something loud where she can wear pink eye-shadow and jump around.

Recently Clive Davis' Mastering class had a special guest attend and guest lecture students on Mastering . Pharrell Williams hosts a masterclass for music students at The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts as part of his 50TH ANNIVERSARY Artist-In-Residency. Joined by Dean Allyson Dean and Professors Bob Power and Jason King, Pharrell listens to students’ projects, offers constructive criticism, and discusses the nature of the creative process. Pharrell also invited high school kids from the Future Music Moguls, a free high school program at Clive Davis Institute, to observe the masterclass.

What I found spectacular about his visit was when he sat down and listened to a story and then listened to a track in progress by a little lady named Maggie Rogers. It was his reaction to me that made me smile and laugh because I have the honor of experiencing this very moment several times a week with my colleagues. To be able to witness true pure beauty at its first moments is humbling and incredible. This expression and reaction from Pharrell made me really smile, but more importantly, her music made my mouth hang open for a minute. Lets just let her work speak for itself. One of my favorite tracks on her album release Blood Ballet is Symmetry. But the song that they review in the mastering class..... wow. You will find her at about 18:15 into the video. Go have a listen and follow this stunning artists work.
